Roofing Repairs in an Emergency Situation

There may come a time that you are going to find yourself with a roof that has been damaged by strong winds, heavy rains, hail storms etc and directly affects the people who are living in the home or it can affect how stable the structure of the house is but a professional roofing contractor cannot get out there to fix it immediately so what should you do. In this type of situation you can make an emergency roofing repair until the professional can get there. If you do not know what you are doing try to get the advice of someone who has experience doing emergency roof repairs or professional roofer.

While waiting for the professional roofers to come fix your roof the most important thing that you need to do in an emergency roof repair is to make sure that you are controlling any flow of water that is seeping into your home. Any water that is seeping into your home can damage the internal structure of your home and could cause more damage to your roof. If there are any stagnant or small pools of water on your roof you need to remove them because this could be a major cause for water damage. If you have a leak but are not sure where it is coming from try to find out but be careful crawling around on the roof. If it is damaged you could fall through the roof.

Some of the material that is used for an emergency roof repair would be duct tape, sealants, rubber sheets, tarps, and patches. Do remember that these are just temporary patches so you need to make sure that a professional roofing contractor is going to out to permanently fix the roof. Before you start to patch your roof you need to make sure that you clean the area that is affected first. If you do not clean off the dirt and stagnant water the stickiness of the patch will be reduced and the patch will wear off faster.

If you see any unattached parts of the roof lying around like shingles make sure that you bring them down if possible so they do not blow away. Keep them in a dry place because you may be able to reuse them. In addition, if they blow away they could hurt someone.

For those that are not sure just what the patch used in an emergency roofing repair is, it is anything that you can use to cover the area on your roof where it is leaking. You can use sheet metal, roof flashing, plastic sheeting, scraps of plywood, etc. You will also need a measuring tape so you can measure where the leak is and get a patch that is large enough to cover it. You may also need caulks, staple gun, nails and hammer, caulking guns, tin snips, etc to complete the temporary fix. To carry the tools that you need to make the emergency repair you should wear a tool belt.
